For Nada contemporary life is many ways disconnects people from the land so the art works to pull that back into contemporary consciousness.  Nada feels that it is also important to record how are before they become something completely different. Repeatedly her work seeks to connect with country, consider who walked the land and ask us to consider the future.

Nada’s Wheatbelt work has focused on River Stories:

Executed during and following three residencies at the Beverley Station Gallery 2013, 2016 and 2018. These works are part of a major project Nada is working on exploring stories of the river and water along and around the Gogular Bilya (Avon River) across the Noongar Seasons.

 

Before European settlement, the River has been described as mostly fresh and teeming with animal and bird life. The river was a prime food source and a profound spiritual resource and remains part of a significant song line for the Ballardong people.  Settlement in the early 1830’s introduced stock watering and domestic use, and pools became places for summer recreation.

The river now is in a very different condition, degraded by the cumulative impacts of settlement agricultural practices and efforts to engineer the flow and flood pattern with the River Training Scheme when the river bed and banks were bulldozed. There has also been and inflow of salt and sediment from agricultural practices.

 

Whilst much has been learnt we continue to face the challenge of caring for this river.
